Apart from the difficulty of
escaping from constancy
perception and the tendency to
draw what we know, drawing
from memory presents a further
problem. To draw from memory,
we must have a reasonably
clear image in mind from
which we can "copy." Try, for
example, to draw from memory
an outline map of the United
States. Generally, we are poor at
this kind of task. The image to
the left is a painting based on
many maps drawn by teenagers.
As a matter of fact, adults do no
better at this kind of task. That
this difficulty is not simply a
function of failure to have ever
established the memory
adequately is shown by the
excellent performance of
which we are capable when
given a recognition-choice
test. Most observers can pick
out the correct answer, though
even the poorest of the
alternatives given is probably
better than most people can
draw from memory. Thus, we
must have a reasonably faithful
memory of the shape of the
United States, but apparently
we cannot adequately call it up
without the help of a
recognition stimulus. If we
cannot adequately evoke our
memory of a thing, we cannot
draw a very good picture of it.
